Mojito and Huarache Cooking Class at El Centro de la Raza
El Centro de la Raza (The Center for People of All Races) has now partnered with El Quetzal Mexican Restaurant to offer a Mojito and Huarache cooking class! Learn how to cook our favorite dishes share in our culture, in our favorite drinks and meet new people all at the same time! Class fees benefit our Senior Nutrition & Wellness Program.
Below is a list of our current class, but check back often as we will keep updating our cooking class list throughout the year at www.elcentrodelaraza.org.
Mojito and Huarache Cooking Class: A huarache is flat bread made with masa, looks slightly like a thin sandal sole, hence the name huarache. You'll find them topped with everything from chorizo (Mexican sausage), steak, queso fresco, and nopal (diced cactus paddles). It's a cross between a sope, a corn tortilla, and a pizza but with that ever present and distinctive corn taste. It's the perfect party food. After you finish cooking up your-Huarache-you can wash it down with a Mojito made from scratch! In its classic form Mojito is a cocktail that consists of five ingredients: white rum, sugar (traditionally sugar cane juice), lime juice, sparkling water, and mint. The original Cuban recipe uses spearmint or yerba buena, a mint variety very popular on the island. Havana, Cuba, is the birthplace of the Mojito, although the exact origin of this classic cocktail is the subject of debate. Learn more from El Quetzal own Bar Manager Juan Sarmiento as he teaches you how to make traditional Huaraches with a refreshing Mojito to end the class.
Class prices vary depending on the class. If you have any questions, please contact us at events@elcentrodelaraza.org or (206) 957-4649.
