Daniel Hinkley Talk
In an exciting, pre Garden Tour event, plantsman, author and speaker Dan Hinkley will share insights into the joys and challenges of creating beautiful gardens in the Northwest. Known for his deep knowledge of plants and penchant for world travel, Hinkley has written several informative resource books including The Explorer's Garden: Rare and Unusual Perennials and another on shrubs and vines; both volumes have become useful and colorful companions for every passionate gardener.
As a highly respected plant expert, Hinkley travels the country from his Puget Sound home to speak on a variety of gardening topics. Recent speaking engagements include the Los Angeles Arboretum and Botanic Gardens. After his Vashon talk, he will travel to Columbus, Ohio's Washington Park Arboretum where he will speak to the American Public Gardens Association (APGA) about their Pacific Connections Garden.
For his Vashon talk, Hinkley will share the journey of his second garden, Windcliff, now in its 9th year. He says, "Windcliff provided the opportunity to change gears from the shaded forest of Heronswood to a full sun, blustery bluff above Puget Sound." Join Hinkley in a visual account of the parameters, principles, inspirations and consequences of his second attempt at taming, but not too much, a six acre parcel in the luxurious gardening climate of the western slope of Washington. Vashon-appropriate plants will be highlighted along the way. Wine and appetizers included. This is a Vashon Allied Arts benefit event.
