"Virgil led Dante down to hell. Nate Speare follows Ronald Reagan into an underworld of madness and corruption and, in the process, calls upon the power of song to redeem Reagan, the USA, and everyone entering psychological adulthood."
"Canto Contra Reagan" was originally developed in collaboration with Enrique Pardo, artistic director of PanTheatre, as part of the Myth and Theatre Festival in 2011 at the Roy Hart International Artistic Centre. Originally titled, "We Died of Thirst" the show is a winner of the Talk of the Town Award at the New England Fringe Festival and was also a finalist at the One Festival, lower Manhattan. Speare conjures this piece again in 3b Development Series to refine the performance in terms of vocal exploration and dynamics.

Speare identifies himself as a mytho-poetic vocal artist currently interested in vocal dynamics as related to theatre, performance and point of view. In conjunction with developing "Canto Contra Reagan" in 3b Development Series, Speare is undertaking a larger investigation that he calls "mytho-poetic vocal performance" in which he composes from improvisation, using sound and gesture to evoke emotional, physical or intellectual associations in the spectator. In his work, Speare is interested in the borderlines between narrative or story-based content, which demands identification and interpretation, and abstract work that uses form to create an open ground for perceptive associations. As an actor, he is also interested in the boundaries between character and caricature, questioning the predominant cultural ideologies about the validity of each of these notions.
NATE SPEARE, MFA in Contemporary PerformanceNaropa University, is a NYC-based vocal artist, performer, writer, educator, mythologist, and astrological consultant. His work emphasizes using the human voice as a vehicle for self-empowerment and self-realization. He recently taught with Everyday Arts for Special Education (E.A.S.E), an initiative to integrate artistic curriculum into classrooms for students on the autism spectrum, at Urban Arts Partnership, and regularly teaches theatre to public school students with Marquis Studios. He received an advanced certificate in Voice Performance, Choreographic Theatre & Cultural Studies from the Paris-based Pan Theatre and trained with the Roy Hart International Artistic Centre in southern France as an Artist-In-Residence. His first solo performance, "We Died of Thirst" named the Talk of the Town Winner of the New England Fringe Festivalwas a finalist at The One Festival 2012; and his latest monologue, "Screame," was co-produced with Nettles Artists Collective as well as with the United Solo Theatre Festival.
"Virgil led Dante to Hell. Nate Speare follows Ronald Reagan down the tunnel of Alzheimer's. It's a terrible mess of human poignancy, cowboy braggadocio, evil politics and ridiculous mentoring. Totally clear-sighted and totally confusing."- Enrique Pardo, PanTheatre
