Live musical theater returns to San Francisco with Stephen Sondheim's Tony Award-winning Into the Woods at Ray of Light Theatre for one weekend only (March 19-21)
Into the Woods is inspired by the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales including Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Ridinghood, and Rapunzel and the Witch. Throughout the play, characters - as well as others independently conceived by Sondheim and Lapine - collide with each other in both humorous and life altering ways.
One of Sondheim's most accessible works, Into the Woods provides an experience of evocative melodies and insightful lyrics. While Act I has a "happy-ever-after" finale, Act II examines the consequences of achieving goals such as: marrying a handsome prince, finding the hen that lays golden eggs, and being saved from a sinister wolf. ACT II then examines how innocence is traded for knowledge and how growing up has its price. While the happy ending in Act II is a bit more circumspect than in Act I, it is ultimately much more satisfying and truthful.
Certainly one of Stephen Sondheim's most popular musicals, Into the Woods had a Broadway revival which featured Vanessa Williams and won several Tony Awards including one for Best Musical Revival. When it originally opened in 1987, Into the Woods won three Tony Awards.
Tickets are $16 for adults and $10 for children and seniors.
