The Secret History of Love
The Theater Offensive & Hibernian Hall are proud to present The Secret History Of Love, a powerful new dance theater show choreographed and performed by Sean Dorsey Dance (named "San Francisco's Best Dance/Performance Company" SF Weekly).
Through full-bodied dance, theater and storytelling, the show uncovers the ways that queer and transgender people managed to find and love each other in decades past. Secret love affairs, the history of outlawing love and the underground ways that transgender and queer people found each other through the decades are revealed in these powerful dances.
The show is the culmination of a two-year community research process, in which Dorsey conducted extensive archival research and recorded oral history interviews with LGBTQ elders, including locals from Jamaica Plain and the South End. From 1920s speakeasies to outrageous 1940s love affairs, from police raids to passionate love letters, from Personals to the Internet, the "love that dared not speak its name" emerges from buried history and explodes onstage in these full-bodied dances. The Theater Offensive helped organize these interviews as a part of our OUT in Your Neighborhood strategy, which engages local community members in creating art that gives voice to the diversity of LGBT experience where we live, work and play.
On the opening night of The Secret History of Love, nationally recognized transgender activist and community organizer Gunner Scott will receive The Theater Offensive's Out on the Edge award. As Executive Director of the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition, Scott led the battle for passage of the Massachusetts Transgender Equal Rights Bill in November. The Out on the Edge Award honors community members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to break boundaries for LGBT arts and activism. A celebratory reception honoring Scott will directly follow the opening performance of The Secret History of Love.
The Secret History of Love comes to Boston after making its world premiere in San Francisco.
