Player Hating: A Love Story
Dir. Maggie Hadleigh-West | 97min | Doc | Drama | US | 2012
An official selection of the Sheffield Doc/Fest and winner of *Indie Fest's Audience Impact Award*, *PLAYER HATING: A LOVE STORY* is an arresting feature length documentary film that delves deeply and intimately into the lives of some of society's forgotten citizens whose desperate attempts to flee their challenged existences grow harder each day. Thirty minutes from downtown Manhattan lies a forgotten community Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY --- where death and destruction are as constant as breathing and represent an oppressed demographic that can be found in every major city in the United States.
Written, directed and produced by Maggie Hadleigh-West, the award-winning filmmaker of *War Zone,** PLAYER HATING: A LOVE STORY* takes the audience into an underground world of poverty, gangs, violence and music that is rarely seen in this mannerunless you live it. Told through the eyes of Half-a-Mill, a 26 year-old hip hop artist from the Albany Housing Projects in Crown Heights, *PLAYER HATING: A LOVE STORY* follows Half and his crew as they write, perform and launch Half's first album, "Milion", in a desperate bid to escape nihilism, poverty and death. True to the origins of hip-hop as an art form, Half's lyrics are a searing chronicle of life in the 'hood' that hauntingly mirror the frustration and despair that forged the birth of the medium nearly 40 years ago. Through the eyes of an urban poet and philosopher, *PLAYER HATING: A LOVE STORY*reveals the tragedy of living in a community abandoned by government, but maintained through humor, dignity, and the sheer will to survive.
