Black Marriage Day Weekend
Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey, NBC former Biggest Loser Carla Triplett, Praise 102.7FM midday host Randi Myles, and other Detroit notables will gather at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History on Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24, to celebrate Black Marriage Day 2012. This will mark the second straight year that the museum has partnered with another well-established, community-based nonprofit in Detroit, the Marriage Resource Center, to promote the African American family through this national initiative
Ms. Winfrey will help to open Black Marriage Day 2012 Friday evening by delivering the keynote address, "Marriage Is For Us," with her husband, Tyrone Winfrey, chief of staff for the Education Achievement Authority of Michigan. Couples will gain valuable insight to help strengthen their marriage from other special guests throughout the entire weekend event, plus they will be able to renew their vows, dine and dance the night away, compete against other couples for prizes and more.
Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets.com, by phone at (800) 838-3006, or at the Museum for $50 per couple and $30 per individual. They can be purchased for $55 per couple and $35 per individual at the door on Friday evening, March 23. Couples that have married at the Wright Museum can purchase tickets at a special rate of $45 in advance. Sponsors of this event include Meijer, Best Western PLUS Sterling Inn, Songs of Solomon Marriage Ministries, B.L.A.C. Detroit magazine and Petals & Gems.

Reception
Black Marriage Day photography/essay contest; couples will be able to have their photo taken by Kennette Lamar of Annistique Photography. They can then submit that photo along with a written essay about their relationship to a team of experts who will judge a winning couple in each category:
Most Enduring -- For a couple married at least 15 years and still passionate about one another
Overcomers -- For a couple that has faced, and beat, great hardship to stay together
Against The Odds -- For a couple currently facing hardship, yet staying together in spite of it all
Most Bountiful -- For a couple that, together, has four (4) or more children (not to include blended marriages)
Most Romantic Proposal -- For an officially engaged couple (marriage date must be set, and location booked)
Couple of the Year Taking into account such factors as how this couple met, how long they have been married, what they have overcome to be together; their enduring passion and the well-being/success of their children
Winning couples will receive such prizes as a $500 Meijer gift card, overnight stay at Best Western PLUS Sterling Inn (site of the Indoor Water Park Recreation Center), "Marriage Bootcamp" hosted by Songs of Solomon Marriage Ministries, subscription to B.LA.C. Detroit magazine and more.
