Tab Tabscott & Friends
Vashon Island musician Tab Tabscott got the music bug early; At 10 years old in St. Louis, he was learning guitar and overheard his teacher play dobro, a kind of resonating guitar, and he was "immediately stricken," he says. Tabscott brings his beloved dobro along with a host of other instruments and six guests to Vashon Allied Arts for a New Works performance.
The show will include original and traditional tunes of bluegrass, Scottish and Irish folk traditions. The guest list includes Islanders Mindy Manley Little on banjo and fiddle, Iris Spring (his niece) on fiddle and John Schubert on guitar and vocals. Other musical guests will include Al Hutteball on upright bass, Jamie Blair on banjo and vocals and Jeff Westerinen on mandolin.
"I intend to play most of my favorite instruments," Tabscott says, "including the musical saw, the jawharp, electric and acoustic mandolin, dobro and pedal steel guitar. I'll also have my ventriloquist dummy there, my good buddy Alex." By including Alex, Tabscott's style is freewheeling and fun,a show for all ages, audience-friendly and playful.
Tabscott has lived on Vashon since 2001. After performing on the road for many years, Tabscott enjoys staying home. "My old friends in Seattle must think I am a reclusive hermit," he says, "because I rarely leave the Island anymore. When my children were born, I put public performing on hold, and have spent most of the last 10 years playing on the couch."
Now he's found a way to stay on-Island and play in public again, his two loves companioned. Don't miss it.
