'15 American Masters: Bernstein, Lauridsen, Whitacre, and Copland
Vesper Chorale, along with Children's Choir of Michiana, opens its 23rd season with a concert featuring American Masters: Bernstein, Lauridsen, Whitacre, and Copland.
Leonard Bernstein, one of the 20th Century's major composers worldwide, was commissioned to write Chichester Psalms for the Chichester Music Festival in July 1965. Vesper Chorale will perform Bernstein's jazz-influenced setting for these Psalms accompanied by organ, harp and percussion.
Morten Lauridsen composed Lux Aeterna in response to his mother's final illness. He says he "found great personal comfort and solace in setting to music these timeless and wondrous words about Light." Both orchestral recordings of this work received Grammy nominations, and in 2007 Lauridsen was awarded the National Medal of Arts for his "radiant choral works combining musical power, beauty and spiritual depth that have thrilled audiences worldwide." (quotations from Lux Aeterna cover notes) Vesper Chorale will share Lux Aeterna's lush harmonies and uplifting words about eternal light.
According to London's Daily Telegraph, Eric "Whitacre is that rare thing, a modern composer who is both popular and original." He has created a worldwide Virtual Choir where singers record and upload their videos, and he then synchronizes them into one performance. Vesper Chorale will present Whitacre's tender Five Hebrew Love Songs, which originated with five love poems written on postcards by his then girlfriend, later to be wife Hila Plitmann, in her native tongue.
And finally, Children's Choir of Michiana will perform, highlighting selections from Aaron Copland, who was often referred to as "the Dean of American Composers."
Join us to celebrate the deep and varied talents of these American composers.
