Noche Gitana: an evening of flamenco dance and music

Twin Cities Flamenco Artists Co-op presents "Noche Gitana," an evening of flamenco dance and music at Icehouse Mpls. Join world-renowned guest artists from Spain and local artists for a celebration of the gypsy spirit.
Guest Dancer:
Carmen's performance celebrates Sevilla's legacy of female dancers such as Pastora Imperio and Matilde Coral as well as the grassroots pueblo-style dancers of Moron, Utrera and Lebrija. Her first teacher was Enrique el Cojo, one of the founders of Seville's unique style of flamenco dance. And her maestro Pepe Ríos (from Morón de la Frontera, nephew of Diego del Gastor) was a major influence. She has worked with Antonio Gades in National Ballet of Spain. In 1983 she was awarded the prestigious Juana la Macarrona prize for dance at Cordoba's National Flamenco Arts Awards. She later worked with such greats as Mario Maya and El Farruco and toured with guitarist Pedro Bacán's legendary group "The Pinini Clan". She regularly tours to cities in Spain, Japan, South America, and Europe. She is one of the most popular and sought teachers in Seville and around the world.
Guest Singer:
Kina was born into the clan of Gypsy artists of Jerez de la Frontera and is niece of legendary singer La Paquera de Jerez. At her young age, her professional career began in the Tablao "Los Gallos" in Seville. She has worked with great artists including Manuel Morao, Mario Maya, Salvador Tavora, Manuel Agujetas, El Grilo and La Macanita and has toured internationally. She has appreared as a featured artist at prestigious flamenco festivals such as Festival de Jerez, La Fiesta de la Bulería and La Fiesta de la Vendimia. She resides in the U.S. and has worked with renowned U.S. companies and artists including Zorongo Flamenco (Minneapolis). Her debut recording "De Sevilla a Jerez" was released in 2009.
Ben Abrahamson (Guitar):
Ben Abrahamson is an active guitarist and composer based in the Twin Cities. His passion for flamenco guitar drove him to Taller de Músicos School of Music in Barcelona, Spain, where he studied under Juan Ramón Caro. Ben has composed extensively for live dance and theater. In 2014, the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet commissioned him to compose "Iberian Quartet", which the MGQ premiered featuring flamenco dancer/choreographer Colette Illarde. In May 2015, Ben composed a one-of-a-kind flamenco score for big band as guest artist with the Macalester College Big Band. Ben has served as guest composer with the Muhlenberg College Theatre & Dance Department in Allentown, PA, and the Macalester College Dance Department. He has shared the stage with such mentors as flamenco guitarists Michael Hauser and Pedro Cortés, Jr., dance veterans Susana di Palma and La Conja, jazz educator Joan Griffith, and music iconoclast Gary Lee Joyner. Ben performs with groups like Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre, Lulu's Playground, the Thomas Nordlund Quintet, and the guitar trio Orchestra for Ants.
Ben teaches private guitar lessons at the Linden Hills House of Music and St. Paul Guitar Studio and group guitar and ukulele classes at Minneapolis Community & Technical College and the DVCC Performing Arts Camp in Media, PA.
Michael Ziegahn (Guitar):
Michael Ziegahn, "Rafael de Tresa," has been playing guitar since graduating from Saint Paul's Highland Park Sr. High School in 1971. His teachers include Michael and Tony Hauser, Dan Glass, Paul Berget, and Pedro Cortes Jr. in Minnesota and Luis Maravilla, Antonio Andrade, and Manolo Sanlucar in Spain. He is class guitarist for Anda Flamenco dance school and appeared in several productions with them including "Doña Quixote" and "Señora Butterfly"at the Minnesota Fringe Festival. He has also worked with local groups Rincón del Flamenco (with the late singer Maria Elena "La Cordobesa"), Zorongo Flamenco, dancer Colette Illarde and his own group Sendero Flamenco with dancer La Tarara. In 2007 he was the guitarist in the dance theatre work "HiroshimaA Night Dreamt and a Day Flashed to Burn" at Intermedia Arts with choreographer and dancer Sachiko Nishiuchi. He is a past president of the Minnesota Guitar Society and has participated in 2012's Acoustic Guitarathon, the Community Concert Series in 2013, the very first Guitarathon in the late 80's (the MGS's first public event) as well as all four of it's recent Flamenco Guitarathons. He recently took part in the evening "Michael Hauser presents a tribute to Paco de Lucia" at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis. In recent years he has begun composing flamenco guitar solos and has included these pieces on his CD entitled "Cazalla". He has been an actor, dancer and singer in many different styles including recent forays into Flamenco singing. He has also taught flamenco guitar privately and at the St Paul Guitar Studio in Lowertown, St Paul.
Sachiko Nishiuchi "La Chayí" (Dancer):
A native of Osaka, Japan, Sachiko Nishiuchi "La Chayí" is an aficionada, dancer, choreographer, instructor, presenter, and producer of flamenco. Having danced flamenco over 20 years, she is still deeply in love with the art form. After moving to the Twin Cities in 2000, she became a resident artist of Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre in addition to working with various dance companies, theaters, and organizations including Ananya Dance Theater, The Southern Theater, and Theatre de la Jeune Lune. Sachiko has created and presented original flamenco theater works including Hiroshima (2007 - Intermedia Arts' Co-presentation Project) and The Apple Tree (2009 - Walker Art Center's Momentum series). She was a recipient of the Minnesota Sage Award for Dance's People's Choice Award and the Jerome Foundation's Travel and Study Grant and her works have been commissioned and presented by the Walker Art Center's Choreographer's Evening and Hamline University. In 2010, she moved to Seville, Spain to deepen her knowledge and skill of flamenco. Her time in Seville proved transformational as she was exposed to its people, culture, language, and origins. She performed in various flamenco venues in town and her most influential teachers included Pilar Montoya Manzano "La Faraona", Farruquito, El Torombo, Luis Peña, and Javier Heredia along with other great artists such as Miguel Funi and Juan del Gastor. She returned to the Twin Cities in 2015. She teaches and performs from her home base of Minneapolis and also travels to Spain, Japan, and other parts of the world to perform, further her studies, and deepen her love and understanding of the art of flamenco.
Andrea Plevan (Dancer):
Andrea took her first flamenco class while living in Chile and then found a vibrant flamenco community when she moved to Minnesota. She performs with Twin Cities Flamenco Artists Co-op, Zorongo Flamenco, Debra Elias Danza Española, and other local groups. Every few years Andrea returns to Spain to take in flamenco in its homeland.
