In the summer of 2012, IRT joins The Operating Theater as they lead students through an incredible development process resulting in a show at IRT!
Since 2007, IRT Theater has made a mission of hosting radically affordable, full-immersion development residences for emerging and established artists. An offshoot of IRT's 3B Development Series, the Westside Experiment will offer students the skills to create original devised theater in collaboration with a working theater company in residency at IRT.
The two-week workshop offers classes in physical actor training, voice, playwriting/self-scripting, and an apprenticeship with IRT artists-in-residence to create their own original theater. This unique model offers the student a true constructivist learning experience, working side-by-side in a completely hands-on way to create a culminating performance for an invited audience.
Students will work with professional performing artists from The Operating Theater to create an interactive performance set in an outpost laboratory at the edge of reality:
In an otherworldly environment, a pair of brilliant young scientists is on the verge of a major discovery that will save humanity! Through their invention, the Portal of Parallels, a variety of guest characters appear: aliens, a glam-rock band, Sedgwick the psychic chicken, and giant creatures from other dimensions. The guests help the audience and scientists solve physical and philosophical problems to save reality and help everyone to return to the "real" world.
The award-winning Operating Theater creates performance that can only be experienced in a live forum. They explore perspective and engage audiences in active participation to alter our relationship of the world in a positive, lasting way.
Lead artists from the Operating Theater include Kourtney Rutherford and Jason Schuler.
Kourtney Rutherford recently performed in Portraits In Dramatic Time at the Lincoln Center Festival. Ms. Rutherford is a member of Big Dance Theater, and enjoyed performing to rave reviews in their Bessie Award winning production of Comme Toujours Here I Stand, which has appeared in Lyon, France, at The Kitchen, CUNY, The New Museum, and the French Institute/Alliance Francaise.
Jason Schuler is the Artistic Director of The Operating Theater. He has directed work at NYC venues including: Abron's Arts Center, The Cherry Lane studio, The Lamb's Theater, HERE, PS122's Avant-Garde-Arama, and New York Theater Workshop's Fourth Street Theater. His play, The Garden of Forked Tongues was listed in "The Year according to PaperMag 2009: Top Ten Downtown Theater Favorites."
