8/20 Social Event: The Not-Creepy Gathering for People Who Are Single and Want to Fall In Love
Produced by performance artist Jenna Bean Veatch
"Are you a nice person who just want to meet another nice person? This event is for you!
Do you ever look around at all of your fabulous single friends and think, 'You're all so great! Why can't I get you all in a room together?' Well, here's your chance!
What if I'm gay? That's great! This event is not just for straight people.
Aw, I do want love, but I'm too old. No you're not!!! This event draws adults of all ages.
(Are you scared? It's okay. Me, too. Let's be scared together.)
This carefully crafted, structured event involves things like writing exercises, chances to talk one-on-one, and all-group activities. Bring a notebook." - Jenna
Full Description:
"This event is created and hosted by Jenna Bean Veatch, a performing artist whose last show, 50 HEARTBREAKS (AND I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOUkraine) played last year in Seattle, New Orleans, and Bellingham. She is currently at work on a new show, YOU ARE NOT ALONE, premiering next year in San Francisco. YOU ARE NOT ALONE is both about the desire for human connection and aims to actually create connection in the moment by having the audience actively participate. Veatch sees The Not-Creepy Gathering for People Who Are Single and Want to Fall In Love as an extension of these same ideas. She approaches the events from an artist's perspective. What might it look like, she wondered, if Miranda July were to host a singles mixer?
These gatherings began in Bellingham, sending out little love ripples that have continued to spread. More dates have been booked there, in San Francisco, and now in Seattle at the Fremont Abbey. In her role as facilitator of this event, she sees one of her main tasks as being to create a space in which people feel comfortable taking risks. She wants participants to feel safe enough to be just a little bit vulnerable, opening up the possibility for true connection. The gathering provides an opportunity for people to meet each other in an environment that is not smarmy or schmoozy but that allows them to be explicit about their intentions toward connection, and that includes the face-to-face interaction that is missing from online dating.
These carefully crafted, structured events, which include things like writing exercises, opportunities to talk one-on-one, and chances to present to the entire group, are sweet, playful, and surprisingly moving. Participants are asked to bring a notebook."
