Caspar Babypants
Chris Ballew, a big-time rock star with a certain level of worldwide success, ditched that life in favor of simple folk-based tunes for young kids. Seattle's Chris Ballew, attended Seattle's Bush School, where he met Dave Dederer and eventually, with Jason Finn, created rock band The Presidents of the United States of America in 1993. By 2008, Ballew began to emerge as Caspar Babypants, performing for young children with a whole new attitude. "Look at me I'm a rock sta--this is not," says Ballew. "My goal is to make my music have a purpose in the world, not hero worship. I want to give parents a gift to listen to without wincing and hope it passes from generation to generation."
Ballew owes much of 'Caspar' to his wife, children's book artist Kate Endle. In that fateful summer of 2008, Ballew said to himself, "I want to make music like her art looks."
"All of a sudden," he says, "I had a volcano of creative activity. I now have a book three inches thick of Caspar songs. I've released 80 of them and I have 254 more."
It's that kind of energy audiences feel when Caspar performs. "I can do the kids thing every single day," says Ballew. "It's more sustainable. I can do three shows a day."
He performs well-known songs like "Cotton-Eyed Joe," "Itsy Bitsy Spider," "Baa Baa Black Sheep and "Ring Around the Rosie," sometimes adding verses, changing the songs. "I'm not a preservationist," he says. "I like to keep it changing, keep it current."
So he has a reggae version of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and a Ray Charles style "Larry Had a Little Cow." Bring the whole family for a great afternoon of feel-good, fun music!
