About Akiko Tsuruga:
Hailing from Osaka, Japan, Hammond organist and pianist, Akiko Tsuruga has been a mainstay in the New York jazz scene since 2001.
Akiko launched her career in jazz immediately after graduating from the Osaka College of Music. While living in Osaka, she had the opportunity to play with numerous world-renowned jazz musicians from the United States, such as Roy Hargrove, Jeff "Tain" Watts, and drummer, vocalist and North Carolina native Grady Tate, to name just a few. Grady Tate, in particular, had the strongest influence on her decision to become a professional musician. She considers him to be one of her mentors, and perhaps the musician she admires the most.
After landing in the mecca of jazz, New York City, it didn't take long for Akiko to make her mark. She is recognized as one of the top organ players in the city, headlining many well-known New York jazz venues, including Showman's, Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, Blue Note, Birdland and Smoke as well as nationally well-known venues including Yoshi's in Oakland and Green Mill in Chicago. When she's not leading her own band, she is the exclusive organist of the Lou Donaldson Quartet, filling the large shoes of her mentor, Dr. Lonnie Smith (who was Donaldson's organist for many years).
Akiko has 6 CDs to her credit as a leader. Four recordings were released in Japan, and two released in the US. Her first US release in 2007, Sweet and Funky from 18th & Vine Records marked #13 on jazz radio chart. The second US release in 2009, Oriental Express also from 18th & Vine Records marked #15. In 2010's Down Beat magazine critics poll, she was ranked in 6th place in Rising Star category. Her anticipated new album "Sakura" is expected to be released September 2011.
"Akiko's playing is like watching a flower blooming, a bird spreading her wings in the music world. Akiko is here to stay making Japan proud after just a few short years in the USA." Dr. Lonnie Smith
"Akiko Tsuruga uses powerhouse chops, good taste, and impeccable sense of swing and extra large ears to remind us of everything we always loves about the organ-trio tradition." DownBeat
" Tsuruga has too much funkiness in her to settle for playing just a 'good' solo." JazzReview
"Akiko Tsuruga ranks as one of the top organists around today." All Music Guide
