The Green
The Green chronicles a gay man's journey from fearfulness to self-knowledge, strength and wholeness. The story lays bare the complexity of this passage after he is accused of inappropriate behavior with a teenage boy; and the suspenseful plot follows a prismatic investigation of this politically charged event.Drawn to the bucolic charm and civility of shoreline Connecticut, middle-aged Michael believes he can leave behind his urban existence (and past transgressions) for a new life with his partner Dan. The couple even contemplates marriage, an option available to them in Connecticut. But Dan expresses doubts that Michael would ever feel comfortable enough to make that kind of declaration in public. Michael's reticence, born of a deep-seated shame, in fact, is the very thing that makes his position in this community so tenuous.Michael's reluctance to express himself wholly - to be completely honest with himself and with those around him - is the flaw that this geographic change can't undo, and is the very thing that leads to the disastrous events that unfold around him. It is because of this discomfort and the vulnerability it engenders that Michael becomes a target for the rumors that lead to his arrest.Ultimately, openness, truth and forgiveness are the routes to redemption in this film. If Michael is to clear his name and salvage the relationships he values - if he is to be treated the way he feels he ought to be treated - he must reveal a secret from his past, forgive himself for a lifetime of shame and self-loathing, forgive others for the ignorance, and finally claim his place in a society.
