Piedmont Jazz Alliance: Lady Be Good: Instrumental Women in Jazz
"The history of jazz would not be complete without acknowledging the contributions of the many women who played, and continue to play a role in shaping the music." - Jazz & Blues vocalist, Bessie Smith
Piedmont Jazz Alliance presents the jazz documentary, LADY BE GOOD: Instrumental Women in Jazz, as part of its 2011 Women's History Month, Women In Jazz celebration
Narrated by Patrice Rushen, LADY BE GOOD: Instrumental Women in Jazz (2007,120mins) focus on women who played jazz during decades when to be a woman in jazz was to be truly an exception. Beginning in the 1800's and into the twentieth century, women played in obscurity, gravitating to the all-women jazz bands of the thirties, then to the big bands and swing units of the forties and to the combos of the fifties. Ten years in the making, the film which features interviews with more than 65 people, most of them women jazz musicians including Marian McPartland, Bertha Hope, with rare archival footage and photos of Lil Hardin Armstrong, Mary Lou Williams and The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, will chronicle the ongoing testimonies and successes of women in jazz, often against formidable odds and will be an incredible tribute to jazz women pioneers from all ages.
Seattle based producer and director Kay D. Ray, will introduce the film and answer audience questions following the evening screening.
The film will be held at Shirley Recital Hall located in the Fine Arts Center at Salem Women's College and Academy.
