Discussing the first Music Hall Superstar
GEORGE LEYBOURNE (CHAMPAGNE CHARLIE 1842 - 1884) THE FIRST VICTORIAN MUSIC HALL SUPERSTAR
The hunt for his true story.
March 2011 sees the publication of The Heaviest of Swells, the first volume of the biography of the man best known as Champagne Charlie.
On Friday March 25th, as a special addition to events at Wilton's Music Hall related to George Leybourne's life, using songs and rare illustrations, actor and author Christopher Beeching takes us on his extraordinary journey of discovery into the true background of this important artiste of the Music Hall.
As Peter Bailey, social historian and author of Popular Culture and Performance in the Victorian City, writes in his Foreword to The Heaviest of Swells: 'Beeching combines assiduous scholarship and imaginative élan to bring Leybourne's often tortuous career to full blown authentic life. Here we have the archival scrupulosity of a literary detective and the insider's identification with his subject that comes from his own showbiz experience Illuminating and delicious.'
