The Gothard Sisters Trio
The three Gothard Sisters, blond and mostly Scandinavian by birth, kick out lively Irish step dance inspired by Riverdance. But they're more than even that. Their Irish dance cred is bolstered by their 2007 triumph when they were part of a team that came in second in Scotland's World Championships Irish Step Dancing competition. Greta, Willow and Solana, based in Edmonds, Washinton, tour widely throughout the U.S.. They step dance in a wide variety of colorful costumes, often combining their fiddle chops with their earth-defying leaps and spins. Trained in classical violin from an early age they play a wide range of pieces, from flamenco and rock to ballads and dance tunes as well as country classics like "The Orange Blossom Special." They also play guitar and bodhran and sing. The youngest, Solana, 15, takes the lead with singing as well as playing the bodhran. Willow, 21, recently added bodhran and mandolin to her repertoire, and she loves to dance and teach. Greta, 23, plays violin and guitar, sings backup vocals and dances. She also teaches private violin students and coaches kids and teens in chamber music ensembles. The Gothard Sisters have recorded four CDs, beginning with their Christmas release in 2006 ("And to All a Good Night,") and their most recent Celtic album Celtic Rainbow in July, 2009.
