Double Indemnity
It doesn't get much better than this noir classic. Directed by Billy Wilder and starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray, the script was co-written by Wilder and Raymond Chandler from a story by James M. Cain. The Hayes Office originally proclaimed DOUBLE INDEMNITY unsuitable for the film-going public. The reason: it "hardened audience attitude toward crime". With the Wilder/Chandler rewrite, DOUBLE INDEMNITY made it to the screen, receiving seven Academy Award nominations. In 1992 it was selected by the Library of Congress for inclusion in the National Film Registry.
