The Nelda Swiggett Trio
Celebrate Valentine's Day with your sweetheart or best friend when the Nelda Swiggett Trio swings into the Blue Heron Art Center for an evening of full-on jazz. Northwest composer Nelda Swiggett, piano and vocals, together with accomplished band mates Chris Symer, acoustic bass and Byron Vannoy, drums will explore a rich palette of sound and color via Nelda's original compositions. Given the close proximity to Valentine's Day, the trio will also perform jazz and Latin standards, especially tunes with the theme of love. Enjoy complimentary champagne and chocolate before the show.
Drawing from jazz, Afro-Cuban, gospel and blues the trio released their debut CD, This Time, in March 2010, on Seattle's award-winning jazz label OA2 Records. Praised as a stunning project by JazzTimes, Swiggett's compositions and performance were lauded as a bright palette, a sinewy execution and a powerful, assertive command by AllAboutJazz.com. Her swinging style has often been compared to Thelonius Monk.
Among their recent accomplishments, the Nelda Swiggett Trio was selected to perform in Seattle's internationally renowned 2010 Earshot Jazz Festival and was coined by one reviewer as easily one of the best performances of the year. Jazz DJ Jim Wilke (KPLU, Jazz After Hours PRI/NPR) selected This Time for his Best Northwest Jazz CDs of 2010. Recordings from the CD continue to receive national and international radio play. In addition to performing and composing, Swiggett teaches jazz and classical piano.
Drummer Byron Vannoy is in high demand as a performer and educator on both the East and West coasts. Playing, recording and composing a wide variety of music, he has performed and recorded with internationally known musicians such as Julian Priester, Herbie Hancock, Randy Brecker and Ernestine Anderson, to name a few. Byron's CD of original compositions, Meridian, was voted Earshot's 2002 "Record of the Year." "Vannoy is as impressive for his soft use of brushes as for the solo creativity he displays in a sizzling performance," said JazzTimes.
Bassist Chris Symer was well established in the Los Angeles jazz scene before moving to the Northwest eight years ago. He's since become one of Seattle's top tier bass players, highly regarded for his versatile and sensitive musicianship. Chris has recorded, performed and toured with many of the world's leading jazz musicians including Tierney Sutton, Ramsey Lewis, Roger Kellaway, Robben Ford and Bennie Maupin. He is currently adjunct faculty at Cornish College of the Arts. And according to Swiggett, "Bassist Chris Symer is the ultimate sideman and character!"
