Beyond the Single Story: An Odissi Dance Performance
Beyond the Single Story: An Odissi Dance Performance
Tickets: $15 general / $20 preferred seating
Odissi, an Indian classical dance form, was re-imagined and re-constructed in the post colonial context to reflect not only movements frozen in time by sculptors who transformed stones into temples, but also everyday stories, narrated across borders.
Light is a central metaphor through which Pallavi and Nabanita will explore the multilayered meanings of the pieces in this production. The dancers seek to honor the legacy of their teachers while also bringing their individual interpretation of the dances into conversation with the United States of Asian America Festival's larger theme, Sparking Light.
Trained in the U.S., and at the Orissa Dance Academy in India, South Asian American artists Pallavi Das and Nabanita Pal aim to capture the versatility of Odissi as a medium that has the power to go beyond a singular narrative.
Beyond the Single Story is a part of the 18th Annual United States of Asian America Festival and is supported by the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center and the San Francisco Arts Commission, and sponsored by Sangam Arts.
