Denis Hayes: Book Signing and Presentation
Without cows, the United States as we know it would not exist. If Europeans hadn't brought cows along on their leaky wooden ships, they couldn't have held the land. Oxen pulled covered wagons, plows, and barges. America's cows (which collectively weigh 2.5 time more than its people) dwarf every other animal in their impact on America's economy, politics, public health, and environment. But over the last century, this once-mutual relationship has soured. Today, most cows spend most of their lives as cogs in factory farms, churning out unhealthy food and pollution. Both species have suffered as a consequence. Our brains, lungs, hearts, and children are being harmed. It needn't be this way. Denis Hayes (national coordinator of the first Earth Day, former director of NREL, one-time engineering professor at Stanford, and President of the Seattle-based Bullitt Foundation) and his lawyer-writer wife Gail, found dairy farmers and cattle ranchers who showed them there are far better ways.
