Sam Reider
San Francisco-native Sam Reider is an award-winning jazz pianist and vocalist. In 2007, the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, At 18, he [Reider] plays with the swinging fluidity of a seasoned pro. Now in his third year at Columbia University in New York, Reider is making a name for himself in NYC. In May 08 Reiders band, Uptown Trio, released its first album entitled Without Strings. Uptown Trio, which acclaimed jazz critic Doug Ramsey cites as impressive in its ability to achieve abstraction without sacrificing continuity and form has now completed two tours of the west coast, performing at such venues as Jimmie Mak's in Portland, Yoshi's San Francisco and Oakland, Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, Catalina's in Los Angeles. Reider's large ensemble project made its debut at this year's Fillmore Jazz Festival on July 4th, combining simple folk melodies with a rich Strayhornesque sense of harmony and a killing groove. In addition to his group work, Reider is an accomplished solo artist. Reider has had the honor to perform alongside such artists as Miguel Zenon, Dave Douglass, David Grisman, John Handy, Bobby Watson, Terence Blanchard, and Eric Harland and has appeared multiple times at the Monterey Jazz Festival. In May 2008, Reider was featured on Marian McPartlands legendary NPR show, Piano Jazz.
