Fables & Fairy Tales: Puss in Boots
New York-based ensemble enCANTA Collective presents Fables & Fairy Tales: Puss in Boots at 5:00 pm on Sunday, April 12, at All Saints Church, 230 East 60th Street, NYC. Open to children and adults of all ages, the concert features works inspired or inspiring "fables and fairy tales," such as Xavier Montsalvatge's magic opera Puss in Boots, Robert Schumann's Three Romances for clarinet, and scenes from Rusalka by Dvořák, The Cunning Little Vixen by Janáček, and La Cenerentola by Rossini. Performers include sopranos Grace Callahan, Angela Dinkelman, Danya Katok, Hong Kyung Kim, Liana Graffanino, Kathryn Supina and Carla Wesby; mezzo-sopranos Stephanie Benkert, Lesley Dolman, Victoria Isernia and Perri Sussman; tenor Adam Margulies; baritone Kevin Miller; bass-baritone Paull-Anthony Keightley; pianist Nobuko Amemiya; clarinetist Michael Dee; choreographer Danielle Harper and stage director Laura Hirschberg.
The diverse and magical program begins with Schumann's Romances for clarinet and piano, followed by a series of fairy tale scenes by Dvořák, Janáček and Rossini. The clarinetist Michel Dee eloquently unfold the fantasy and narrative imagery of the work, an emblem of the composer. Antonín Dvořák's lyric fairy tale, Rusalka, one of the most popular Czech operas, tells the tragic story of a water spirit who falls in love with a human prince. Dvorak's contemporary, Leoš Janáček, lightens the mood somewhat with his opera, The Cunning Little Vixen. In this charming Czech piece, two foxes flirt and fall in love in the midst of various woodland adventures. Rounding out the first half of the program is Gioachino Rossini's La Cenerentola, a refreshing take on the Cinderella story. After intermission, the company presents Puss in Boots, by the Spanish composer Xavier Montsalvatge. The opera follows the crafty, mischievous Puss as he helps his peasant master gain riches, a title, and love. The wily feline outwits an ogre and a king and helps himself to some treasure and treats along the way. enCANTA's evening of fairy tales and fables promises to be a feast for the imagination, featuring playful staging and marvelous music.
