Internationally known storyteller Laura Simms and one of her students, local storyteller Jeannine Laverty, weave their expertise in myth, folk, literary tales and personal narrative into an evening of stories new and ancient. The New York Times called Simms "Irresistible! A major force in the revival of storytelling in America." She lives according to the principal that stories generate compassion that can transform lives and communities, and she promotes this message through her work with numerous international organizations. Laura is the adoptive mother of best-selling author Ishmael Beah, with whom she often lectures. Jeannine Laverty has been telling international folk tales since 1979 when her work teaching English as a Second Language to immigrants in New York City showed her firsthand how the U.S. is made up of cultures of all the countries of the world. Jeannine performs for adults and high school students as part of the storytelling ensemble, SweetLand Storytellers, known especially for its program, "Voices from the Vietnam War." She is recognized as one of the foremost storytellers in the Northeast.
