ODEONQUARTET
Subscriptions are available now for VAA's 2010-2011 Chamber Music Series. Renowned Vashon cellists, Rowena Hammill and Douglas Davis have invited a superb group of musicians with diverse repertoires for this three-Friday evening series, sponsored by 4Culture.
The first performance will be held at Vashon United Methodist Church; subsequent concerts will be performed at Blue Heron Art Center, Friday,October 8, when ODEONQUARTET presents Three Centuries of Russian Chamber Music.
Formed in 1999, ODEONQUARTET may be Seattle's answer to the groundbreaking group Kronos Quartet. Passionately dedicated to introducing obscure contemporary chamber music, ODEONQUARTET's repertoire focuses on a diversity of styles weaving in threads of tango, American prison blues, Persian folk music, jazz and more.
Cofounded by violinists Gennady Filimonov and Artur Girsky, both of Russian descent, the quartet also includes violist Heather Bentley and cellist Rowena Hammill. Cellist Douglas Hammill will join the quartet on one piece and Hammill will accompany on piano for one work.
Hammill, who joined ODEONQUARTET six months ago, explains the close group dynamic. "There's something about the string quartet; composers often do their best work for two violins, viola and cello. A string quartet has an incredible ability to present music; it's almost like a marriage between four people. We're all in our 40's and we're all about breaking new ground."
Beginning with the Russian minimalist sound of Siberian born Paval Karmanov, the evening's repertoire will cover three centuries of Russian chamber music. "His work has rock and folk influences," says Hammill. "A happy piece in D major, it's kind of like hip hop for classical music; challenging to play and a little bit mind-bending."
Moving backwards in time, the next piece composed in the mid-20th century by Dmitri Shostakovich, is dedicated to victims of fascism and war. Quintessentially Russian music, according to Hammill, Shostakovich infused himself and his deep despair into this historically significant work. The final piece, from the 19th century, will be light, sentimental and romantic.
"This concert will be compelling and accessible for all ages," adds Hammill. "There is something for everyone."
