Little Red Riding Hood
Vashon Allied Arts' Family Series 2010-2011 begins on October 31. This year's series will include theatre, rock music, clowning and more designed for the enjoyment of families with children up to age 13. Programs take place at 2 pm, Sundays, October 2010 through March 2011, in the Blue Heron Art Center. VAA Family Series is cosponsored by CenturyLink and Thriftway.
While we may all be familiar with the story, Thistle Theatre performs Little Red Riding Hood in the Bunraku-style of puppetry and brings their own stamp of originality to the beloved tale. Staged for ages 3 to 103 to enjoy, Thistle Theatre's lovingly created puppets include characters such as Rudy, an impish squirrel who befriends Red and warns her of the dangerous wolf lurking in the woods.
When Red sets off to her Grandmutter's house with a basket full of goodies, a world of adventure awaits. Arrogant, wily Wolf assumes a variety of clever disguises in his attempt to deceive Little Red Riding Hood. Fritz the telegram singing bird and Greta, a woodland rabbit boasting a carriage full of baby bunnies, round out the zany characters Little Red Riding Hood meets along the forest path. The action filled story is set in Bavaria and includes an interactive song in which audience members are invited to sing along and even operate puppets.
Nationally-recognized songwriter, Sue Ennis best known for her work with platinum-selling Seattle rock band Heart, penned the hilarious Wolf Aria. The tune has grown to become one of Thistle Theatre's most popular songs.
Thistle Theatre is the only performing arts organization in the Pacific Northwest that specializes in tabletop Bunraku, an ancient Japanese puppetry style. Puppeteers dress in black to suggest invisibility while operating puppets. Thistle Theatre is funded in part by 4Culture.
