Bozophobia...a one woman show
Admittedly the class clown from day one, as a child Susan Harris performed for her mother's friends and later kept her friends laughing with her antics. An accomplished actress, Harris performed in many Island plays including Drama Dock's Same Time Next Year, Lips Together Teeth Apart and On Golden Pond; she even scored a bit part in a movie with Sharon Stone. Harris says her passion for performing, humorous stories from her years as a children's entertainer along with the ever-pressing question, "What's it like to be a clown?" motivated her to write the one-woman monologue about her life as a clown. Not a show for kids, her play will debut in VAA's New Works Series.
While Pookie, her alter ego, provides Harris with legitimate license to be funny, she admits that clowning around is in her nature. "With the make up and wig, I feel different, but there's always that part of me which sometimes may come out inappropriately," she acknowledges with her infectious laughter.
Twenty years ago Harris needed employment. She watched a clown perform outside a movie theater and marveled at the happiness and laughter that exuded from the clown's gleeful audience. She contacted Clowns Unlimited, enrolled in clown school and has since moonlighted as professional clown and clown trainer for birthday parties and corporate events. Harris also works as a pre-school teacher and may be found behind the cosmetics counter of Sephora.
Her New Works play, directed by Stephen Floyd, with guest appearances by Lisa Breen and Jeff Woolen, begins in a comedy club. In a comedy of errors, the comedienne is accidentally sent to a kid's birthday party and the clown is sent to the club to entertain adults. Transforming from clown to woman throughout the performance, Harris shows how the clown and the comedienne are intertwined and may in fact be one and the same.
Her monologue, definitely written for an adult audience, briefly addresses the 'fear' some adults express about clowns. Harris says the movie industry has contributed to Coulrophobia (the psychological term for abnormal fear of clowns) with frequent portrayals of clowns as scary, drunk and evil. In a play on words, she calls her show Bozophobia. "This show is funny…a bit shocking and fascinating. To me it answers many of the questions that I'm asked and hopefully entertains the audience at the same time," adds Harris.
