NYCycle: Fall 2010
New Ensemble Plays Set In The Present
3 Playwrights/ 3 Months/ 1 Show
aMios Presents:
NYCycle: Fall 2010
ConsumerCreditCultureClash
August 2010 â" Is it possible for the theater to be truly topical? Thatâs the inspiration for aMiosâ NYCycle series: writing plays in the here and now to serve as living breathing history of New York in the moment. Follow the moment with their next installment of NYCycle: Fall 2010 beginning September 17th.
Hereâs the process: 4 times a year, 3 playwrights create 3 thirty-minute plays themed around an assigned month, set in New York City for a preselected cast. For this cycle, the plays must be set in September, October, and November 2010, include the quote âThere are so many people from everywhereâ and reflect the immediate future in relation to the theme âConsumerCreditCultureClash.â
âWhat does "ConsumerCreditCultureClash" mean? Why is it all squeezed together? I think it's the dominant anxiety in NY right now. With our country's economic health predicated by our ability to borrow money in small or large sums to fuel our consumer-based economy, people's lives are in a squeeze. It's redefining who we are. We'll see what the plays say,â states Artistic Director Christian Haines.
The playwrights:
Sept: Dan Loeser (Richard II â" Matchbook Productions).
Oct: Steven Cole Hughes (Billy Hell â" writer, Law and Order)
Nov: John Behlmann (39 Steps - Off-Broadway, The Good Wife, All My Children, Revolutionary Road)
aMios, an acronym for Art & Music in Our Souls, was founded by alumni of The National Theatre Conservatory to explore new ways to create vital theatre. Through sHotz: short ensemble plays (the 1st Monday of every month at Under St. Marks) and NYCycle the company has developed over 100 short plays .
