John Ellis & Double-Wide
Puppet Mischief is saxophonist John Ellis's second album with the Double-Wide project, and sixth as a leader, composer and producer. The music of this new album has the tight togetherness of a modern jazz trio, exhibited through a distinctly rootsy New Orleans perspective, infused with the colors and sounds of a carnivalesque brass band.
The core of John Ellis & Double-Wide is a quartet, made up of John Ellis on saxophone, Jason Marsalis on drums, Matt Perrine on sousaphone and Brian Coogan on organ. This album features additional guests Gregoire Maret on harmonica (co-leader of ObliqSound's 2007 release "Scenarios" and frequent guest of Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, and Pat Metheny), and Alan Ferber on trombone.
John Ellis has been gaining fans and followers in the media and the music world, after five and a half years playing with Charlie Hunter, now regularly tours with the John Patitucci Trio, and played Newport Jazz Festival in 2009 with Mos Def. He appears as a guest on two recent ObliqSound releases - Gilfema's 2008 album "Gilfema + 2," and Olivier Manchon's 2010 release "Orchestre de Chambre Miniature - Vol 1," and recently played bass clarinet on Sting's latest record "If On A Winter's Night." Ellis' "The Ice Siren," an hour-long through-composed narrative composition for string quartet, tuba, percussion, guitar, vibes, saxes and vocals debuted in 2009 as part of the Jazz Gallery's Large Ensemble Composers Series, and continues to be performed in 2010, and garnering critical acclaim.
