The Dybbuk and Post-Film Talk with Brown Bag Lunch
"The Dybbuk" is a heart-wrenching tale of betrayed love and greed, set in a 19th century Jewish shtetl in the Pale of Settlement. It is a world permeated by spiritual and mystical beliefs and practices that include bridegrooms who wear burial shrouds under their wedding coats, dances of life and death that are intertwined on wedding days, and a wandering or evil spirit (dybbuk) that enters the body of the living and that only can be removed through exorcism. Filmed, in part, on an actual shtetl employing villagers as extras, "The Dybbuk" preserves a folkloric tale while providing a unique glimpse of a way of life that no longer exists.
"The Dybbuk" will be introduced by Professor Emerita Lois Rudnick who will also lead an optional post-film discussion with brown bag lunch.
