Dave Peck Trio
Seattle based jazz pianist, Dave Peck recently released latest recording, Modern Romance (Let's Play Stella Records) his 11th recording project. The Dave Peck Trio will perform at Blue Heron to mark its release. Recorded live at Jazz Alley in Seattle in fall 2007, standards from the Great American Songbook represent the Trio's exploration and reinvention of the jazz piano trio. Modern Romance brings a fresh approach to tunes such as Bye Bye Blackbird, East of the Sun, Lover Man, They Say it's Wonderful and more. These are love songs, old love songs, but the interpretation is distinctly contemporary. Joining Peck, meet the brilliant Jeff Johnson on bass and preeminent drummer Joe La Barbera. Both rhythmic and romantic, the Trio uses standard repertoire as a framework for new composition and form. Rich, intuitive and harmonically complex, their signature sound features Peck at the piano. Known for his deeply introspective and passionate style and intense focus on the narrative of this music, Peck has been lauded for his award-winning CD's. Northwest native, Peck has earned critical acclaim for trio and solo projects. Trio, Solo, 3 and 1, Out of Seattle and Good Road have become radio favorites. He has been heard on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz, PRI Jazz After Hours and NPR Jazz Alive. His collaboration with saxophonist Bud Shank includes Tales of the Pilot Bud Shank plays the music of David Peck, Live at Jazz Alley, Tomorrow's Rainbow and The Lost Cathedral. He has also performed with great jazz artists of our time including Chet Baker, Joe Williams and Freddie Hubbard. Originally from Minneapolis, Jeff Johnson has played with the likes of Charlie Rouse, Billy Hart, Barney Kessell, Chet Baker, Lew Tabackin, Eddie Daniels, Julian Priester, Bob Moses and many more. He has released four CD's as leader including Free and The Art of Falling. Cadence Magazine says, "He plays with a mystique that takes the music out of the ordinary with his inventive improvised lines" Johnson plays with and leads various small ensembles, composes and records. Joe La Barbera, hailing from New York, has enjoyed a long and varied musical career that has taken him all over the world with the finest names in jazz. In 1978, he joined Bill Evans in what was to become a landmark trio. Evans said, "Joe is very dedicated to playing quality musiche's a top soloist and he does the right thing at the right time."
