Greg Ruby Quartet
Last year Greg Ruby received artist grants through The City of Seattle's Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs and King County's 4Culture to compose, record and perform new compositions inspired by Gypsy jazz guitar legend, Django Reinhardt. The Greg Ruby Quartet was formed to record and perform those compositions and pay homage to the musical genius of Django on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Vashon is lucky enough to be included as one of the venues for the debut of this all-original new work performed by some of our region's most accomplished musicians. From his home in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, guitarist Greg Ruby followed his creative instincts to the string jazz of Django Reinhardt. Attending Cornish College of the Arts, Ruby found himself at the core of the Pacific Northwest's emerging Gypsy Jazz scene. The driving guitar rhythm behind internationally acclaimed Pearl Django, he performed with jazz greats Howard Alden, Frank Vignola, Patrick Saussois, mandolinist David Grisman and legendary vocalist Dan Hicks. Founding member of Hot Club Sandwich, Ruby can be heard on all four of the band's recordings and produced their most recent CD And If Only. Native of Ekaterinburg, Russia, violinist Eugene Bazhanov has played violin since age five. He graduated from the Ekaterinburg Music College. After moving to United States, Bazhanov joined The Florida Orchestra in Tampa. Recently relocating to Seattle, he now plays with Seattle Symphony and Pacific Northwest Ballet orchestras, Teatro ZinZanni and with various classical, world music and jazz groups. San Francisco guitarist Doug Martin is reputed as one of the West Coast's finest Gypsy Jazz practitioners. Member of the John Jorgenson Quintet, Martin has toured throughout United States and abroad. His energetic, precise and creative interpretation of Django guitar tradition has earned him the respect of musicians from around the world. Martin recently performed with the Lulo Reinhardt Latin Swing Project headed by Lulo Reinhardt, descendent of Django Reinhardt. When on tour hiatus, he may be found leading his own group, the Avatar Ensemble. Hailing from Port Angeles, Spencer Hoveskeland began playing bass at age ten. He attended Western Washington University and studied with former member of the Bill Evans Trio, Chuck Israels (Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock). Martin currently performs, tours and records with wife Tracy as the Bottom Line Duo, a dynamic cello/bass duo. They have toured internationally and performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Spencer recently released Harbinger, a collection of original Jazz compositions.
