Variations on Beauty
Run of the Mill Theater in Baltimore has just begun its Sixth annual Variations Project where Maryland playwrights (and anyone else who has thought of writing a play) are invited to submit short plays on a selected theme - this year it is Beauty. This has traditionally been a project where Baltimore-area playwrights, actors and directors create new and diverse theatrical experiences around one theme. The theme for 2010 is Beauty...selected through an open voting process involving audience members at last season's production, Variations on Hope. Local artists of varying experience and backgrounds will comprise the playwrights, production team and cast. The project is unique to Maryland, in that the writers creating the new plays, the artists involved in the production and even the public have a collaborative involvement in the project. The Variations Project also fosters communication between Maryland artists, bringing together people of varying ages, ethnic and economic backgrounds, with all levels of experience in the theater to work together toward a common goal. The Project's technical sophistication and professional standards provide a learning atmosphere for those who are less experienced working in professional non-profit theater.
Phase 1:The Variations Project is a process-oriented collaboration. A gathering was held to generate source material for playwrights. This year's event was held at Load of Fun Studios located in the Station North Arts District. All interested playwrights (whether they attended the gathering or not) had/have access to the source material.
Phase 2:Write, write, and write some more! The second phase of the project is the submission of new short plays. The deadline for consideration in this year's Variations on Beauty was 11:59 pm on February 15, 2010.
Phase 3: The third phase of the project is the development and selection process. . Approximately 8-10 scripts will be chosen as finalists for the development process. A public reading of ALL 29 submissions was held in mid-March, and 8 final plays were selected for production. Plays chosen for production, will have an opportunity to be revised and refined with a director during the rehearsal process.
Play requirements: Plays must be inspired by the source material provided (that means no digging out old plays from the bottom drawer to submit!) and must explore the theme of power. Ten-minute and short one-act plays are preferred. Beyond that, there are no demands, requirements, or requests regarding style. We ask that participants write the plays that they want to write, rather than writing plays that they think we might like. Playwrights may submit up to two original scripts.
In 2006, Variations on Fear, was named Best Production of 2006 by City Paper and received a Greater Baltimore Theater Award for Outstanding Experimental Production. In 2005, Variations on Desire was a City Paper Top Ten Production, and won the Greater Baltimore Theater Award for Outstanding Experimental Production.
