Vashon Chamber Music Festival
Island cellists and Festival Artistic Directors Rowena Hammill and Doug Davis, who live on Vashon have organized a weekend to please any serious chamber music buff; Hammill and Davis bring so much passion and excitement to their performance, they can make even the most reluctant listener rapt with attention. Friday and Saturday evening will feature special guests: violinist Ronald Patterson, Professor of Violin at University of Washington's School of Music; violist Roxanna Patterson; pianist Allan Dameron, Acting Music Director and Conductor for Pacific Northwest Ballet; clarinetist Patricia Kostek, director of Chamber Music San Juans.
Friday and Saturday night (same program), will include Mozart Trio for clarinet, viola and piano, Schumann Piano Trio, Fantasy Pieces and contemporary composer Ingolf Dahl Trio for clarinet, violin and cello. "It's a wonderful piece," says Davis, who now owns the cello that was played when the piece premiered in the 1950s. Concerts will end with Brahms A major piano quartet.
Saturday morning Hammill and Davis, along with accomplished bassoonist Martin Kuuskmann and Vashon violinist Karin Choo, will perform a Family concert geared to children at the Blue Heron Art Center. Hammill says the goal of the kid-friendly concert is to introduce young audience members to chamber music with a selection of short pieces followed by questions and answers. "We want to make it accessible," adds Hammill.
Sundays performance, at Vashon United Methodist Church, will feature a different repertoire to include Johannes Gebauer Trio featuring Kuuskmann on bassoon followed by Mozart Clarinet Quintet 'one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written,' exclaims Davis. They will also perform Piazzolla Tango for bassoon and strings. The grand finale will showcase a string sextet featuring three married couples: Hammill and Davis on cellos, Stephen Bryant on violin and Sue Jane Bryant on viola, Ronald Patterson on violin and Roxanna Patterson on viola in the
Tchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence, Op. 70.
Hammill, originally from Sydney, Australia, taught four years at the University of Northern Iowa before moving to Los Angeles where she accepted a professorship at California State University, Northridge. While in Los Angeles, Hammill joined the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra as Assistant Principal and assumed the same job at Los Angeles Opera. She has performed in summer festivals including Chicagos Ravinia Festival, the oldest outdoor music festival in North America, the Bach Aria Festival and the Oregon Bach Festival and on hundreds of movie and television soundtracks.
Doug Davis, a scholarship student of Gregor Piatigorsky held principal positions with the St. Louis Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and Pasadena Symphony. Davis also played principal cello at Oregon Bach Festival and at the Bach Academy in Stuttgart. He has played first cello for many fine film scores, including John Williams' Jurassic Park and James Horner's Apollo 13. He currently performs as guest principal cello for Seattle Symphony Orchestra.
