Chicago, IL --- Chicago world musicians unite for an evening that breaks down borders while helping re-build a country in need. The event joins musicians from four different continents and numerous musical backgrounds. The vibrant and energetic line-up includes Indo-Afro-Carribean funk from the critically acclaimed Funkadesi, soulful roots-reggae from Rebel Roots, Afro-Middle Eastern jazz fusion from Magic Carpet & global beats from DJ Mwelwa. This music is guaranteed to make you move, so grab your dancing shoes and get ready to groove!
Event organizers ask a minimum donation of $15 for the evening. Limited $20 VIP tickets include special balcony seating and light snacks. 100% of ticket sales benefit relief efforts of three non-profits working directly with Haiti:
Haitian Community Hospital / L'Hpital de la Communaut Hatienne (www.haitihosp.org) The Haitian Community Hospital (HCH) is a non-profit organization that provides accessible quality health care to over 80,000 people in Haiti each year.
CHAI Concerned Haitian Americans of Illinois (www.chai-haiti.org) CHAI is a Chicago-based non-profit that assists impoverished people in Haiti. Their primary focus is providing education and medical care for Children.
Haitian Congress to Fortify Haiti (www.haitiancongress.org) The Haitian Congress to Fortify Haiti is an Evanston-based non-profit that strengthens the Haitian community in the Diaspora. They recently helped send Haiti $1 million in medicine.
This event was organized and sponsored by World Fusion Chicago, Sound Culture & HotHouse. A special thanks to Logan Square Auditorium for donating the event space and to the exceptional musical line-up who donated their talents and time for the evening. Funkadesis one-world sound, roots-watering vision, and positive vibe create a compelling musical force. Their Indo-Afro-Caribbean sound combines bhangra, bollywood, reggae, funk & Latin grooves in one sonic package! From Time Magazine to London's BBC radio, this Chicago-based band has garnered worldwide recognition. Funkadesi even caught the ear of President Barack Obama who raved "Funkadesi really knows how to get a crowd going. I can't say enough how energizing this band is. There's a lot of funk in that desi!" Funkadesis 10-person ensemble represents the diverse multi-ethnic communities within Chicago. Each band members unique and uncompromised cultural/musical contribution creates one unifying sound and vision. Among other accolades, Funkadesi was named 2008 "Best World Music Group" by Chicago Reader. According to Geoff Chapman of The Toronto Star, "This ideal party band...also bears messages of togetherness...The rhythms of Indian Ragas and reggae have striking similarities, while the Latin, African and contemporary funk that's spicing this one-sound, many-voices stew fits the all-world mlange to a tee. Rebel Roots plays organic, raw, soulful roots-reggae with an undeniably international and positive vibration. With members reigning from Jamaica, Poland, Ethiopia, Ghana and Chicago - Rebel Roots cooks up a special blend of musical and cultural influences that converge to form an infectiously funky reggae experience. Frontman and lead vocalist Eddy Graham was born and raised in the mountain village of Catadupa, Jamaica. These roots lend a uniquely authentic island flavor to this Chicago-based band of talented global musicians. Rebel Roots is steadily gaining a reputation for their energetic and dynamic live shows. Rebel Roots regularly performs at clubs, block parties and festivals in and around the Chicagoland area. They opened for Junior Reed (of Black Uhuru) at the African-Caribbean International Festival of Life and European reggae stars Vavamuffin at the 29th annual Taste of Polonia Festival. Rebel Roots was the only local band featured at Chicagos 1st annual Euro Reggae Festival where they followed reggae legends and GRAMMY award winners - Inner Circle (Bad Boys).

Magic Carpet honors ancient music while taking a bold step into the future. They energetically explore traditional rhythms, North African & Middle Eastern maqams, East African pentatonic scales, Indian ragas, western jazz modes and improvisation. This multi-cultural Chicago-based band is not only composed of accomplished musicians, but also teachers that regularly excavate the history of music and its connection to ancient cultures. Magic Carpet strives to promote the similarities of people through the context of music. According to Stuart Rosenberg of Chicago Magazine, "Flying gracefully through mystic realms of musical fantasy, Magic Carpet connects so many different worlds - from the sonorous sub-saharan sounds of Ethiopia to adventurous Andalusian fantasies, Egyptian love songs and Hebrew prayers - and they do it with deep spirit and great affection. Originally from Zambia in southern Africa, Mwelwa Musambacine is influenced by cultures and people across the globe. Mwelwa is recognized across music circles as one of Chicagos best world and international music DJs. Mwelwa plays everything from reggae, morna, forro, kizomba (semba), salsa, bachata, samba, merengue, afrobeat, ndombolo, rai, jazz, funk, son, soukous, blues, calypso, classical, rock, bhangra, zouk, house, soca, various types of Arabic, Indian & African vibes and more. Mwelwa also plans and promotes events as a part of Akasuba.
