11/10 Thur 7:30 ~ TIM O'BRIEN ~ $30 +$2 processing
In Tim O'Brien's music, things come together. The uncanny intersection of traditional and contemporary elements in his songwriting...his tireless dedication to a vast and still-expanding array of instruments...and his ongoing commitment to place himself in as many unique and challenging musical scenarios as possible has made him a key figure in today's thriving roots music scene -- and well beyond it.
O'Brien's presence --be it as a bandleader, songwriter, mentor, instrumentalist, or vocalist-- has been strongly felt not only in his own rich music, but in the many recordings of his songs by such artists as the Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks, Dierks Bentley, Nickel Creek, Kathy Mattea, the New Grass Revival and the Seldom Scene; and in his recorded collaborations with Steve Martin, the Chieftains and innumerable others. Most recently, O'Brien has been performing before capacity crowds in the band of Mark Knopfler, who described O'Brien as "a master of American folk music, Irish music, Scottish music -- it doesn't matter; a fine songwriter and one of my favorite singers."
Tim's work, born of wonder and experience, transcends circumstance while never pretending to be anything but one man's story. "I'm a folk musician," he says humbly. "I gravitate towards the old sounds and I still sing a good bit of traditional material. My songs come out of that well of folk music. If you do it long enough, you can't always tell the old from the new -- it blends together. It becomes what happens between the chicken and the egg: I don't know which came first, but it contains the whole of life."
Marc Douglas Berardo is the kind of hard working, fast moving, adventure seeking, keen observer who lives for the story and the song. In what amounts to song length works of fiction, Berardo's sharply drawn portraits cast a net on unusual and beguiling characters and places. With a painter's eye for detail, and music firmly rooted in the great American sound, Berardo sings about circus retirees, expatriates in Florida rum bars, union iron workers, old poets, aimless New York City debutantes, near death car crashes, hard nosed fishermen and, of course, the changes that experience brings to everyone. He does this "simply and well" with what Rambles Cultural Magazine calls "careful images and great tunes."
Based in the port town of Westerly, Rhode Island, Marc performs his made up songs on an average of 150 nights a year everywhere from bars and house concerts to theaters and national festivals ...places such as the legendary Town Crier Cafe in New York, The Bluebird Cafe in Tennessee to the world famous Trade Winds Cantina in North Florida and even St Anne's Chapel in Vatican City, Italy. Along the way he has shared the stage with a variety of the best in acoustic, folk and rock music, including Livingston Taylor, John Haitt, Cliff Eberhardt, Peter Rowan, Guy Clark, Vassar Clements, Ralph Stanley, Chris Smither, Buffalo Springfield, Brooks Williams, Norman Blake, NRBQ, Steve Forbert, Mustard's Retreat, Eric Anderson, The New Riders of the Purple Sage, Ruthie Foster, Red Molly, Garnet Rogers, Greg Trooper, Kate Taylor, The Pousette-Dart Band, Amy Speace, Cheryl Wheeler and The Kennedy's, among others. As a sometime member of The DesBerardo Band with his brother Chris, Marc has also been a part of shows with classic rock acts including Little Feat, The Marshall Tucker Band, Levon Helm, The Doobie Brothers, David Allen Coe and others.
