I Sing the Body Electric @ The Queer Arts Festival
Walt Whitman and the Beat Generation: they dared to be different, expressing an individual language and lifestyle in the midst of the conservative social mores of their times, changing our culture forever.
Just in time for Pride weekend, Erato Ensemble's I Sing the Body Electric celebrates the queer spirit of Whitman and the Beat Generation. Whitman's poetry is the basis for contemporary music about an emotional love story of two men -- from meeting and falling in love, to separation by war and death. Music by Kurt Weill, Charles Naginski, William George and world premieres by Lloyd Burritt and Ben Schuman.
Whitman is the quintessential American poet: free-thinking, individualistic, patriotic while being critical. He has become an American institution and accepted as Poet Laureate. During his own time, Whitman was no stranger to controversy: his poetry was decried as immoral for its unapologetic depiction of homosexual desire.
A century later, Whitman's life and work provided spiritual guidance to a new generation of American poets who became collectively known as "The Beat Generation." Although one hundred years apart, Whitman and the Beats shared literary and cultural DNA. Both extolled individual freedom, and protested against tradition, conformity, materialism, militarism, industrialization, and urbanization. Both portrayed nature as divine, and both appeared during times of turmoil: Whitman during the Civil War, the Beats under the threat of nuclear annihilation. Whitman and The Beats, many of whom were homosexual or bisexual, celebrated homosexual encounters as both physical and spiritual experiences - Whitman in the Calamus poems in Leaves of Grass and Allen Ginsberg in "Howl" for two examples - and were censored for their perceived sexual obscenity.
Celebrate the queer spirit of Walt Whitman and the Beat Generation with contemporary music inspired by their poetry.
