UNDERWORLD (Joseph von Sternberg, 1927)
Saturday, July 11 5:00pm UNDERWORLD Directed by Josef von Sternberg (USA, 1927) Cast: George Bancroft, Evelyn Brent, Clive Brook
Josef von Sternberg's scintillating UNDERWORLD starts out a hard-hitting crime saga as envisioned by writer Ben Hecht, but quickly yields to the Sternberg touch, becoming a reverie on fear and desire.
Cinematographer Burt Glennon (who would become a master of film noir style), adds moody light and shadow to the story of gangster Bull Weed (George Bancroft) and his fiery moll Feathers (Evelyn Brent). Hecht demanded that his name be taken off the credits, but went on to win his first Academy Award for the story!
