The Gurney
Cliff makes a desperate attempt to rescue his deranged brother Wesley as he spirals down the slippery staircase of madness. The appearance of the exotic and elusive Lulu only serves to deepen the mystery of Wesleys demise, while motherly neighbor Barbara's solution is an offering of macaroni. Hauptscheins unique look at the human psyche pushes the boundaries of familiar relationships between brothers, neighbors, and lovers, creating a dislocated world where each violent twist leaves us second-guessing as to what it takes to save someone from himself. The Gurney is an innovative new play which asks us to question the darker capabilities of our minds, and the answers we find are terrifying.
Tickets: Full price $20, Senior/ Industry/ Student $15. No performances Thanksgiving day. Sunday November 30th two-for-one tickets. $10 industry night Sunday November 9th.
Secret Life Theatre
Secret Life Theatre was founded in 2004 by award-winning UK-based director Julio Maria Martino with the express purpose of producing the plays of David Hauptschein. To date the company has produced three world premieres in the UK: An Alchemy of Flesh, Old Red Lion Theatre, London (2008); The Playactor, Old Red Lion Theatre, London (2007); and The Ballad of Johnny 5 Star, cowritten with David Vlcek, Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Library Theatre, Manchester (2004). Martino has also directed Hauptschein's When the Walls Have Ears, Mary Arrchie Theatre, Chicago (2003); and Trance, White Bear Theatre, London (2002). The Gurney will be Secret Life Theatre's first production in Chicago. About the Playwright David Hauptschein is a Chicago based playwright whose works in recent years have principally been performed in the UK, where the press has dubbed him the David Lynch of theatre. Inspired by Surrealism and Outsider art, he has developed a lexicon that is unique among contemporary playwrights. Recalling the haunted imagery of painter Francis Bacon, Hauptschein's plays reveal the fevered epicenter of the human imagination. Hauptschein's plays also include Trance, which won a Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (1996) and then transferred to the Brighton Festival (1997); Breakdown and Out, Mary Arrchie Theatre (2000), The Persecution of Arnold Petch, A Red Orchid Theatre (1997); and No One Goes Mad: From Writings of the Insane (1993).
