SOLD OUT: Politics and Prose Presents ARUNDHATI ROY
St. Paul's Church
4900 Connecticut Avenue NW

Arundhati Roy won the Booker Prize in 1997 for her first novel, THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS. She then turned to activism and nonfiction, writing books such as CAPITALISM: A GHOST STORY and POWER POLITICS, work for which she was honored with the Lannan Foundation Cultural Freedom Award, the Sydney Peace Prize, and other - all of which made her one of Times 100 most influential people in the world. In her long-awaited second novel, THE MINISTRY OF UTMOST HAPPINESS, Roy follows two very different protagonists. Anjum is born intersex and lives as a woman, cobbling together a home in a cemetery. The beguiling Tilo, meanwhile, is courted by several men, and loves a Kashmiri activist. When concern over an abandoned infant brings Anjum and Tilo together, Roy deftly weaves her characters' fates with India's social and political tensions, using multiple points of view as well as "found" documents.
