ABOUT THE SHOW: ASYLUM The lights come up on an old-fashioned circus ringleader in top hat and tails who welcomes the audience to the 'madhouse' where everything is flipped, the asylum for do-gooders who have been caught doing good. Where the heroes are all questionable and the villains run free. Where less money is spent on schools than on jails. The ringleader escorts the audience into a place where a group of unlikely superheroes are locked up where their powers have been taken away by a gaggle of sinister villains that you just might recognize. Thus begins Asylum, the new movement/theater piece created by the Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company, in collaboration with an incredible cadre of local professional artists. The production uses theater, rap, spoken word, hip-hop, modern and aerial dance to speak about issues from failed monetary policy, food politics and global warming to homophobia and self hatred and the ways that young people find hope in the chaos of contemporary society. The piece is at once thought provoking and entertaining, a modern day superhero story with a twist.
ABOUT THE DESTINY ARTS YOUTH PERFORMANCE COMPANY The Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company is a dynamic, diverse collective of teenagers who creatively address challenging personal and social issues. Their original productions are a trademark combination of different movement, theater and musical styles.
