Fresh Future Farm's 'Vantastic' Food & Community Fundraiser
Join Fresh Future Farm Inc. on Saturday, January 24th as we work to raise the money needed to buy a van to haul inventory and offer free rides to customers that live within 2 miles and spend $50 at our neighborhood store.
This pig roast will feature Lowcountry sides from Gullah Chef BJ Dennis and Fresh Future Farm's CEO, Mrs. Germaine Jenkins. When the farm opens to the public in the winter of 2015, Chef BJ will be a regular fixture. He'll help educate farm tourists on the Lowcountry's rich agricultural and culinary history and offer culturally relevant cooking demonstrations for residents.
Fresh Future Farm Inc. is an inner-city farm that leverages healthy food and grocery products to create socially just economic development in a North Charleston food desert. Our farm is modeled after the nationally recognized Growing Power Inc. in Milwaukee, WI founded by MacArthur Genius Fellow, Will Allen. Like Growing Power, Fresh Future Farm strives to be a grassroots effort that is inclusive, multi-ethnic, multi-generational and revenue-driven.
We are a permaculture (permanent agriculture) farm and believe in the permaculture ethics model - earth care, people care and fair share of the surplus. Our farm is unique because it is designed require low maintenance for maximum fertility and harvest as it matures. Permaculturalists (aka permies) believe that the problem is the solution. The Chicora-Cherokee community lacks quality food and jobs so why not develop a project that trains and employs residents to grow and sell healthy food (brilliantly sustainable, right)?
