You're Really Something
Directed and Choreographed by Leralee Whittle in collaboration with performers Sara Wilbourne Per Haaland Mandy Greenlee Kevin Herring Melanie Kay Leralee Whittle Damara Ganley
You're Really Something is vintage Sam Shepard in the age of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and MySpace. The search for identity and place in the vast American wasteland turns into the act of stuffing ourselves into a network of virtual friends where we hope we'll be found. Unchecked impulses and dysfunctional relationships lead away from the last vestiges of American truth and strange beauty to the sterile digital world of social networking, where millions hide behind degraded digital identities, manufacturing their simply artificial appearance with great efficiency.
We probe the matter by working with the concept that much of our direction is determined by social forces. Dances address absurd social antics. Body languages reveal often ignored subtexts. Dialog from Sam Shepard's Cruising Paradise invites us into both the vast and the narrow to celebrate the rich textures of some people's lives in this country. We perform excerpts about the freedom to live in our imagination, the freedom of sexual orientation, and the freedom to get ourselves into twisted relationships. :) :(
