Bullied by the Beast
Open Circle Theater is pleased to announce it's patnership with CityArtist Project recipient Lois Mackey on her new play, Bullied by the Beast, running January 8th thru January 30, 2010. Lillian Johnson is a victim of the subprime loan fiasco and faces losing her home. She places an ad on Craigslist seeking roomers as a last ditch effort to save her house from foreclosure. What she gets is an interracial gay couple and a view of the hostility towards them from the black community around her as the State prepares to vote on gay partnership. As emotions heat up, all that's needed is a match to set off this explosive confrontation. Local playwright Lois Mackey's works includes "Mule", and "Catchin' Hell Callin It Good Times". She is also the author of two plays for children - "Harriet Goes to School: a StudentÂÂÂÂs Life after Brown vs. Board" and "Jacob I Have Known", commissioned by Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas. Her play "Meet and Greet" was read at the 2nd Annual Fringe ACT Festival of New Original Work in 2003. She recently collaborated with other local artists to create "Freedom, a musical theater celebration of Juneteenth" produced by The Mahogany Project and BrownBox Theatre, performed last year at Seattle City Hall. Do not miss this multi-media event. You might think that you know where you draw the line; but when hate rears it's ugly head, who really is willing to stand up to being Bullied by the Beast?
