Lanterns Award Luncheon Honoring Greg Mortenson
**Tickets will be available the day of the event at the door**
Humanitarian and international peace-maker Greg Mortenson will be the featured honoree for the 10th Annual Lanterns Award Luncheon with proceeds benefiting MOSTE (Motivating Our Students Through Experience). Mortenson co-authored the New York Times Best Seller, Three Cups of Tea and the new book Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He is the co-founder of the Central Asia Institute which works to build schools and educate girls in volatile regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday April 8, 2010 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. The lunch will include speeches by current and former MOSTE youth participants and MOSTE mentors as well as an address from Greg Mortenson.
Mortenson has established, or significantly supported, the construction and management of 131 schools in rural regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. His schools provide education to 58,000 children, with an emphasis on teaching the 44,000 girls in attendance. "If you educate a boy," says Mortenson, "you educate an individual, but if you educate a girl, you educate a community." Mortenson recently donated 150 copies of his inspirational book to the MOSTE middle school and high school mentees.
MOSTE is a grassroots mentoring organization with a big mission: change the lives of underserved girls in Los Angeles County by providing them with the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of going to college. MOSTE begins in seventh grade and continues through college culmination to provide mentoring, scholarship and college-access programs aimed at getting 100% of participants into and through college successfully.
The Event Honoray Committee includes: J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath, Marian Wright Edelman of the Children's Defense Fund, Molly Barker, Founder, Girls on the Run, Dolores Robinson of Dolores Robinson Entertainment, Paul Cummins, Roger Lowenstein, Black Women Lawyers Association of LA, and the Latina Lawyers Bar Association.
