On February 21, 2015, the Writers and Readers Symposium: A Celebration of Literature and Art will take place at Hemingbough near St. Francsiville, Louisiana.  Abigail Padgett, Ava Haymon, Moira Crone, and Richard Sexton are the authors who will read from and discuss their work, as well as the creative process they go through with their writing.

Abigail Padgett is an award-winning novelist of ten books, and her latest, AN UNREMEMBERED GRAVE, is set in the St. Francisville-Angola area.  Using professional experience in dealing with mental illness, Padgett has created, for a series of novels, a most interesting and intelligent woman detective Bo Bradley.  Bradley is a bipolar child abuse investigator, who gives life to both the pros and cons of the bipolar mental disorder.   As an added treat this year, Padgett has agreed to team up with Ava Haymon and teach a writing workshop at Butler Greenwood Plantation in St. Francisville on Saturday, February 28.  She has taught classes in creative writing at Harvard University and University of California, San Diego, so Louisiana participants are in for a really fine writing workshop.

The poet among this group of talented authors is none other than Louisiana's current Poet Laureate Ava Leavell Haymon, the author of four collections of poetry.  Editor of the LSU Press' Barataria Poetry Series, Haymon is also the recipient of many awards including The Louisiana Literature Prize for poetry in 2003, the L. E. Phillabaum Poetry Award for 2010, and the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters 2011 Award in Poetry.  Having taught as an Artist in the Schools for numerous years, she has agreed to teach a poetry workshop for the students at Bains Elementary in St. Francisville.  Then, she teams up with Padgett on February 28 to teach an exciting Writing Workshop at Butler Greenwood.

New Orleans author Moira Crone's new book is widely touted as her best--THE ICE GARDEN, a chilling tale of family dysfunction.  Crone is both a short story writer and a novelist. Her DREAM STATE is a collection of short stories set in Louisiana, and many of Crone's stories have been anthologized in collections of "year's best" or "best stories," e.g., BEST OF LSU FICTION, BEST STORIES FROM THE SOUTH, and NEW STORIES FROM THE SOUTH  In 2009, Crone received the Robert Penn Warren Award for Fiction from the Fellowship of Southern Writers for the body of her work.  Her recent novel THE NOT YET was short listed for the Philip K. Dick Award for paperback original science fiction novel of the year.

Nationally renowned photographer and nonfiction author Richard Sexton joins this group from his studio in New Orleans. Sexton's latest book CREOLE WORLD:  PHOTOGRAPHS OF NEW ORLEANS AND THE LATIN AMERICAN SPHERE is published by the Historic New Orleans Collection and has been called his "most ambitious photographic project."  The photographs in this book were made between 2006 and 2012 in Argentina, Panama, Ecuador, Cuba, Colombia, Haiti and New Orleans.  His other books include NEW ROADS AND OLD RIVERS,  TERRA INCOGNITO, THE HIGHWAY OF TEMPTATION AND REDEMPTION:  A GOTHIC TRAVELOGUE IN TWO DIMENSIONS, and GARDENS OF NEW ORLEANS:  EXQUISITE EXCESS.  Sexton is another award-winning author.  Among other awards, he was given the 2014 Michael P. Smith Memorial Award for documentary photography by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.

A visual treat at this Writers and Readers Symposium is a juried photographic exhibit of images that connect in some way with writing or literature--"A Novel Image."  Darlene Reaves, who is a CLA Committee member, has worked hard at getting the word out to area photographers, who submitted their work electronically.
