Celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day with Chief Seattle's Duwamish Tribe at the Duwamish Longhouse. Sing, dance & drum at 1-3pm with Duwamish heritage group "Singing Feet"- winner of a 2012 Seattle Mayor's Arts Award. Chief Seattle's Speech film at 11am. Princess Angeline film at 11:30am. Exhibits/Art Gallery 10-5. Free admission.
Duwamish Tribe--Representatives from the Duwamish Tribe's heritage group "Singing Feet" will share traditional Duwamish teachings through story and song. TilibSedeb (Singing-Feet), the Duwamish Tribe's language and culture group was recently honored as a recipient of a 2012 Mayor's Arts Awards from the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs. In January 2009, the Duwamish Longhouse & Cultural Center was opened to promote and share the heritage of Chief Seattle's Duwamish Tribe--Seattle's First People and only native tribe. Duwamish tribal leadership continues unbroken since Chief Seattle. Cecile Hansen, the great, great, great, grand-niece of Chief Seattle has served as the Chairwoman of the Duwamish Tribe for 38 years. The Longhouse provides a home for the Duwamish people and visible place to declare, "We are still here." Like traditional potlatch houses, it is a gathering place to which the Duwamish can invite guests.
Directions: First time guests should use map search & driving directions and allow 20 minutes extra.
Parking: Additional free parking in area includes 2 parking lots across the street.
By bus, bike, and foot: The longhouse is across the street from the Duwamish Trail. By bus, take Route 21 to Chelan & Spokane, walk/bike 1 mile south on the Duwamish Trail. Cross W. Marginal Way SW at the parking lot driveway of Herring House Park and walk 30 feet south to the longhouse.
