JOY OF JAZZ is a 3 concert series taking place in Vancouver's delightful St. James Hall on the west side of the city. Stikjazz Music and The Georgia Straight proudly present five acclaimed vocalists in concert performing their renditions of jazz and blues standards, folk and pop tunes and original pieces. Audiences will be treated to intimate duo, trio and quartet groupings at these shows.
The third show will feature the acclaimed American jazz vocalist Kate McGarry and her husband guitarist Keith Ganz in their first ever Canadian appearance. It is a thrill and indeed a true pleasure to know that audiences will be able to hear Grammy nominated Kate and Keith perform in the acoustically warm and inviting environment of St. James Hall. Kate is an absolutely exceptional vocalist who sings with truth and soul and freedom. This is a must see event for fans of vocal jazz!!
With thanks to The Georgia Straight, Coastal Jazz & Blues Society, The Rogue Folk Club and Oceanwest Construction.
"Anyone who believes that the Great American Songbook has been drained of any new interpretations should hear Kate McGarry's version of "The Man I Love". McGarry examined Ira Gershwin's lyric and found it was "such a sad song, with this idea that you couldn't be complete as a person without finding a man". McGarry and guitarist Keith Ganz recast the song in a slow tempo with reduced harmonies, and McGarry's haunting performance, which focuses on the words "I'm waiting", gives an entirely new feeling to the song. It is precisely this type of scrutiny that makes McGarry one of the great jazz vocalists of our age..." April 04, 2012 Thomas Cunniffe - Jazz History Online
"I'm inclined to call McGarry the Kurt Elling of female jazz singers. (Elling, by the way, makes a cameo on Girl Talk so that O Cantador, the lovely Brazilian ballad, is a gorgeous duet.) Like Elling, McGarry has a charismatic, distinctive and appealing voice, an eclectic embrace of jazz and non-jazz, and timbre and delivery that are informed by folk and pop but nonetheless don't detract from the jazz feeling of the performance."
