Jeffrey Lewis and the Junkyard, Shilpa Ray, TWIGS
Jeffrey Lewis and the Junkyard Jeffrey Lewis is an artist with every single breath he takes. It's a good thing he lives in New York. Prolific and endlessly talented, Lewis' tunes are indie lo-fi stories that are quirky and heartwarmingly familiar. Beginning his music career in 1997, Lewis has released a high volume of albums, EP's, comics, videos, illustrations, meant only to reach those within arms reach, but instead have taken off, amassing to modest success and tours with our favorite bands from the last ten years. Like a younger, more stable Daniel Johnston (who Lewis has performed with), his success, hailed as the "Big Apple's best kept secret" by NME, is a surprise by the very nature of the nature of his releases that are almost too personal for distribution, let alone fanfare. Over the years Lewis has signed on to RoughTrade, Olive Juice, and Smoking Gun Records and added members to his lineup here and there. His weird personal experiences and clear sense of humor are all over his output, adding to his qualities that are nothing short of endearing. Shilpa Ray has turned the classic true love tune, "I Only Have Eyes for You," into a stalkerish feminist growl. Aided by her Happy Hookers, Shilpa Ray sounds most like Debbie Harry after a hard night of partying. The songs are danceable aided by some major attitude, given by Ray's antagonistic vocals. Titles like "Filthy and Free" and "What the Fuck Was I Thinking?" channel PJ Harvey on their full length release, A Fish Hook An Open Eye. "The Coward Cracked the Dawn" is a vaudeville romp turned alterna-angst anthem and back again. SXSW introduced audiences to this New York crew and their live performances are notorious for being loud and the crowd erupting into screams. Already recruiting members from Inside Voices, Donnaveter, and Leather Tom and the Dirty Dudes, Lewis is ready for more local talents to enter his realm. Lewis is a singer-songwriter with a knack for pretty, jangly, narrated tunes found on L'vav Goes to Emandee w/ My Unicef Box. Jack is the younger brother of NYC DIY mastermind and fellow evening's performer, Jeffrey Lewis. They have, of course, collaborated several times in the past and are label mates on Smoking Gun Records and Olive Juice Music. More Info: http://www.myspace.com/jacklewisband
